A few words from Elder L. Tom Perry :

I look around me and find some very definite signs of the decay that is beginning to occur. Corruption, crime, dishonesty, immorality, pollution, laziness, devotion only to special interests—these are signs that precede the fall of great civilizations. We see so much evidence of these signs before our eyes. Yet I realize the promise that has been given to us in this great land of America. I also remember the prophecies concerning our great responsibilities to preserve that which we have been blessed with by God. The Lord has promised to sustain the truth in this land.

Our commitment to America has been testified to by many, but I will point out to you special witnesses who have indicated our responsibilities to this land.

First from Brigham Young, second president of the Church: “Will the Constitution be destroyed? No: it will be held inviolate by this people; and, as Joseph Smith said, ‘The time will come when the destiny of this nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.’ It will be so.” (Journal of Discourses, 7:15.)

Now another witness, John Taylor, third president of the Church: “When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States, the elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth, and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the oppressed of all nations.” (The Gospel Kingdom, Deseret Book Co., 1943, p. 219.) This is part of the program.

A final witness is from George Q. Cannon, former member of the First Presidency, who said that “the day will come when the Constitution and free government under it will be sustained and preserved by this people.” (JD, 23:104.)

Now, I declare to you that if we are not in the beginning stages of the fulfillment of this prophecy, we are at least in the stages where we are preparing for its fulfillment.

What stage are we at now?

One final thought from Elder Perry:

"Fifty-six men represented 2.5 million in 1776 to bring about a new nation that has literally blessed the whole world. That was one man to every 45,000. Today I’m calling on each of you to exert an influence over about 220 million people in this land. The odds are even better for you; the advantage is on your side. This is the time for you to be bold enough to stand up for what you believe, to let the world know that God still blesses this great land of America—if we will live righteously, according to that which he has commanded."

Remember the dream?

I've been learning a bit about Martin Luther King Jr. lately.
I think he is a powerful reminder of the way to effect change.
Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. asked those who
believed his message to take the following pledge of nonviolence?

Pledge of Nonviolence

1. As you prepare to march meditate on the life and teachings of Jesus

2. Remember the nonviolent movement seeks justice and reconciliation - not victory.

3. Walk and talk in the manner of love; for God is love.

4. Pray daily to be used by God that all men and women might be free.

5. Sacrifice personal wishes that all might be free.

6. Observe with friend and foes the ordinary rules of courtesy.

7. Perform regular service for others and the world.

8. Refrain from violence of fist, tongue and heart.

9. Strive to be in good spiritual and bodily health.

10. Follow the directions of the movement leaders and of the captains on demonstrations.

Powerful. I'm incorporating them personally.

Not that I am a violent person....it just sounds an awful lot like what Jesus taught.

It is the way we should live our everyday lives, whether we are expressing

a dissenting opinion, or participating in a demonstration...

( okay my everyday life does not include demonstrations, YET.)

My dad shared his favorite MLK quote:

"Though you hate us, we will love you,
and we will defeat you with our capacity to suffer."

History shows he was right.

I like this kid...

Last night for FHE we had the kids write down questions they had about the gospel or anything else that was on their mind and put them in a bowl. Then we randomly chose and tried to answer them. Needless to say, it was an open invitation for questions about ice cream, Darth Vader, and other such silliness. However, Will was not to be distracted (hard to believe I know-Will lives for silliness). He wrote some very thought provoking questions for a 7-year old. Foremost on his mind was, "Why would Heavenly Father put animals on the earth that can kill us?" and "Why won't Heavenly Father tell us when the second coming is?"
We had some great discussion.
Thanks Will.

Here is a P.S. that has nothing do do with this post. If you have ever had a baby and a husband, you must read this blog post!!! Laugh out loud funny.

Best performance so far this season...

Okay, so I am not really qualified to make this assertion as I have not watched a single entire episode this year. And yet I have absolutely no doubt that no one has come close to David's revisitation of "Imagine"... It was, again, beautiful; this time, in a 19 year-old, grown up kind of way.

So then...

Last night, we had to endure a pummeling of the Utah Blaze to see David perform a half-time show...I use the the term "show" loosely, as it was 2 songs and a very sweet rendition of "Happy Birthday" to his mom. Still yet, he was flawless--good times for all!!!
